SHOUTcast was introduced in 1998. SHOUTcast itself is a cross-platform proprietary software used for streaming media accross the Internet and is most likely the most compatible webcasting format. SHOUTcast was designed to allow broadcasters to deliver media from their home pc(WIndows or Mac) directly to the listeners media player. It is supported by all major media players such as Windows Media Player, Itunes, Winamp, QuickTime and RealPlayer.
